عبدالله انصاری از همان اوایل كودكی هوش و استعدادی سرشار داشت و با راهنمایی و هدایت پدر خـــــود به فراگیری علوم دینی پرداخت، وی تحت تعلیم اساتید آن روزگار به یادگیری علم حدیث و تفسیر مشغول شد و زیر نظر علمای بزرگ آن عصر همچون یحیی بن اعمار شیبانی مشهور به خواجه غلتان ولی، شیخ ابو اسمیعل و محمد بن حمزه به یادگیری علوم مختلف پرداخت. پیرهرات در تصوف از استادان زیادی تعلیم گرفت و ملاقات با شیخ ابوالحسن خرقانی تاثیر زیادی در روحیه و منش وی داشت.

او از خردسالی زبانی گویا و طبعی توانا داشت چنان كه شعر فارسی و عربی را نیكو می‌سرود و در جوانی در علوم ادبی، دینی و حفظ اشعار، مشهور بود، وی تبحر خاصی در علم حدیث داشت و در فقه روش امام حنبل را پیروی می‌كرد. خواجه انصاری رهرو در مكتب خراسانی بود و به دلیل علاقه وافری كه به ادبیات و تصوف پارسی داشت توانست از عارفان معروف این زبان شود.

او شیوه و لحن نوینی را در زبان فارسی ایجاد كرد كه آمیخته از نثر و نظم دلنشین فارسی بود، او در ادبیات فارسی به دلیل نثر فصیح و نظم ملیح؛ مختص و ممتاز شده است.

پیرهرات رباعی های روان و دلنشین عرفانی و روحانی نیز سروده است و به همین دلیل او را می‌توان نخستین و قدیمی ‌ترین رباعی‌سرای ایرانی دانست، همچنین نظم و نثرخواجه عبدالله انصاری دارای سادگی و شیرینی خاصی بود، او نخستین كسی است كه در زبان فارسی نثر مسجع ساخت. پیر انصار همچنین یكی از محدثین بزرگ عالم اسلام، محسوب می شود.

شیخ الاسلام در تقوی، عبادت، مراقبت، ریاضت و حفظ حقوق دیگران از بی نظیرترین انسان ها در عصر خویش بود و به دلیل این فضایل ملكوتی و انسانی افراد زیادی به محضر وی می رفتند تا از او كسب فیض كنند.

آثار و تالیفات گرانقدر و ارزشمندی از خواجه عبدالله به یادگار مانده است كه از آن میان می توان به مناجات‌نامه، طبقات الصوفیه، نصایح، زادالعارفین، كنزالسالكین، قلندرنامه، محبت‌نامه، هفت‌حصار، رساله دل و جان، رساله واردات، الهی‌نامه و منازل السائرین اشاره كرد.

هنگام حكومت غزنویان و سلجوقیان، علمای اشعری و معتزله به مخالفت با سبك و روش خواجه عبدالله می پرداختند و باعث محدودیت فعالیت وی می شدند، این سختگیری ها تا آنجا بود كه پیرهرات توسط حكومت به مدت یك سال در بوشنگ زندانی شد ولی او همچنان بر عقاید خویش باقی ماند و به دفاع از آن برخاست.

سرانجام این عالم و عارف عالی قدر كه در راه رسیدن به عرفان حقیقی تلاش و كوشش فراوانی كرده و هرگز دست از اعتقاد و هدف خویش برنداشته بود، در 82 سالگی رخت سفر بربست و مریدان و شاگردان خویش را در غمی شگرف فرو برد. پیكر این عالم ربانی در گازرگاه واقع در 10 كیلومتری هرات به خاك سپرده شده است.
